As the party moves into the mid levels of encounters and is done smashing orcs and goblins, it’s time to shop for some new monsters to throw at them.
The Hook(ed) Horror is a favorite of mine, especially since it is exotic and iconic in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
Something a bit different to fight, and with a fun narrative to explore- imagine one of these jumping out at you from the shadows. AC 15 and 75 hit points- not that hard to hit, but it can soak up some damage- this combined with the rate and damage of attacks means it creates a timer of sorts- the party needs to put it down FAST, or else it can rip them up real good.
Two attacks at +6 to hit and 11/2d6+4 damage again adds to the tension, and it’s fast moving for its size- 30ft. Another option, and one I like to use with many of my monsters is to juice it up a bit- add in some magic items- like a ring or two that got stuck on one of its hooked arms- so now the monster benefits from said ring(s).
